Friday Favs

Happy Friday! It's been a busy work week for me so I can't wait for the weekend.

We have NO plans this weekend, but I'm looking forward to some R&R and a few things on TV this Sunday! First, are any of you planning to watch GREASE Live on FOX? I am really excited for this!! I always loved Grease and the music so hope it's good!

I'm also planning to watch the Pro Bowl on Sunday since the Seahawks are out of the Superbowl this year (boo hoo hoo) but the Hawks are representing in the Pro Bowl so I'll be cheering them all on. Go Russell Wilson #3!!

Yesterday it was POURING and overall just a really dreary day, but on my way home from picking up Lila the skies cleared a bit and the most VIVID rainbow appeared! You can't tell so from the picture, but you could see the entire arch and ALL of the "ROY G BIV" colors (haha). I haven't seen one like that in a long time so it was pretty cool.

My mom had a dentist appointment yesterday so Grant and I both worked from home so we could tag team staying home with Owen while we both had conference calls and tons of work to do. Slightly stressful, but oh so fun. I wish I was home with him everyday! He's so sweet and we played lots of cars, trains and took funny pics of course. I love his expression in the one on the bottom right.

I'm known for perhaps slightly overdressing my salads (I love dressing and am not the type to get it on the side - I usually want more!) but let's be honest - that's not so healthy. So to cut back I've been making tons of taco salads using salsa as the main "dressing" along with avocado and a bit of sour cream. It's so good! And way less cals.

Hope you all have a nice weekend!!

Ferry adventure

On a rainy weekend there are only so many indoor adventures we can do before everyone gets too stir crazy, so last Saturday even though it was pouring, we grabbed our raincoats and headed out for a ferry boat adventure! The Seattle area has many ferry boats that travel to and from the islands and the peninsula, but because I grew up on an island that required a ferry, it always felt like more of a chore than "cool." Now that I don't do it often though, it's a fun little adventure especially for the kids.

This time we chose the Edmonds/Kingston ferry. We parked in Edmonds and walked onto the ferry. Next stop? Kingston!!

Goodbye dock!

We were pretty much the only people on the "sun deck" although there was definitely no sunshine to be seen ... Owen found plenty of puddles to jump in though and was thoroughly soaked in the first few minutes!

Once the ferry docked in Kingston, we walked off and were in the quaint (tiny) Main Street. We quickly ducked out of the rain for some comfort food!

Clam chowder hit the spot!

And fish and chips are always a good choice!

Then we headed to the cutest little candy shop before heading back to the ferry.

Lila quickly found the "Frozen" jelly beans.

And a messy candy cane for Owen.

Cheeeseee!!!!!

And back we go! It's a nice 30 minute boat ride and was a fun way to spend a weekend morning.

What's Up Wednesday

Today I'm linking up with Mix & Match Mama to share my "What's Up Wednesday!" Here's what we're up to this week ...

What we're eating this week ... To keep things simple we've been grilling in big batches and then having easy salads throughout the week. Grant also smoked a giant batch of pulled pork this weekend so we've been LOVING that - the kids gobble it right up!

What I'm reminiscing about ... Ahh ... summer. This time of year always gets me. Once the holidays are over I'm ready to fast forward on to summer. Bring on the sunshine!!!

What I'm loving ...

What we've been up to ... We've been pretty much working and hanging with the kids. I could use a date night or two! Now that football season is "over" (for us in Seattle) it's nice to have a free Sunday though!

What I'm dreading ... In general I don't really "dread" much, so not much to say here.

What I'm working on ... Our house always feels so bare this time of year when we take down our Christmas decorations. I don't normally decorate for Valentine's Day, but I did pick up this cute little banner in the Target $1 bin (surprise, surprise!).

What I'm excited about ... My Lasik appointment is coming up fast! I'm already sick of wearing my glasses and it's only been 3 weeks. One more week to go! This could also go in the "I'm dreading" category, but I'm more excited for the outcome!

What I'm watching/reading ... Grant and I have "couples" shows we watch together and then ones we both watch separately. We've been watching a lot of Vikings lately on Amazon Prime. It's a great "couples" show because it has action/bloody gore fighting and of course, relationship plotlines or us gals. A good mix! And it's interesting to think about the Vikings back in the day. Would have been a really interesting time for sure!

I also watched one episode of the new Amazon original series "Mozart in the Jungle." Have any of you seen it? It's about the NY Symphony and all the drama that ensues.

What I'm listening to ... We've been loving our Amazon Echo Grant got me for Christmas! Amazon Prime music has so many great playlists! Do any of you have one? I love ours.

What I'm wearing ... I love this top I got on the Nordstrom sale this summer in the olive color, that I had to snag the white one when it went on sale for $25 bucks! I love neutrals so the white is perfect for me and matches everything.

What I'm doing this weekend ... NOTHINGGGGG! And I'm excited about it. This is the first weekend in forever we have NO plans and I'm hoping to keep it that way. Grant's going to the Seattle Boat Show and I told him not to come home without a new boat (lol - kidding. Sort of).

What I'm looking forward to next month ... OOh, February. I am excited for Valentine's Day. I got the kids some cutesy little things for Valentine's Day morning, and Lila already picked out her Valentine's for her school friends (Frozen - naturally).

What else is new? Nothing much! I am looking into little trips for this Spring. Can't really decide what to do - it's $$$$$$$$$ to travel with four now that we have to buy plane tickets for both kids.

Bonus! What is your favorite Valentine's Day treat? Anything chocolate!!!!!!!!!

Cauliflower Soup

The past two Sundays I've made soups for us to eat during the week. This week I made Smitten Kitchen's Silky Cauliflower soup, which is healthy, delicious and easy. I do also love this cauliflower soup which is more indulgent with bacon and cheese, but this one is great as well.

Silky Cauliflower Soup from Smitten Kitchen (serves 4-6)
1 head cauliflower
2 TBL olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 quart box chicken stock
1/2 cup grated parmesan
Salt and Pepper to your liking
Swirl of Balsamic Vinegar to top!

Chop your cauliflower, removing leaves and stems. Set aside. Heat the olive oil in a large soup pot over medium heat and add the onion and garlic, cooking until soft (about 5 mins). Add broth and cauliflower. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cover, simmering for about 15 minutes or until the cauliflower is soft (don't over do or cauliflower can be very gluey). Using an immersion blender, blend until smooth (you could also use a blender). Add your parmesan and stir until combined. Top with salt, pepper and a swirl of balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

I actually think this soup tastes better the next day. I've also seen a very similar recipe where you add a few wedges of laughing cow cheese at the same time as the parmesan ... could be delicious!

Happy Monday

Happy Monday!! We had a fun weekend with the perfect mix of activities and R&R at home. After last weekend it felt really short, but alas back to work today. And really, I feel like I can best explain our weekends with this graphic (haha):

Friday we accomplished two "firsts" which I got no pictures of (naturally). The first? We registered Lila for kindergarten for the fall school year! How is my sweet girl old enough for that?! Time flies for sure. Second, we applied for Owen's first passport! Baby passports are hilarious because their little pictures are valid for 5 years so Lila's passport is her at age 1! Owen's picture is pretty cute too.

As for the rest of the weekend, it was a mix of pouring weather on Saturday, but nice on Sunday!

Saturday was POURING but we went on a fun (but very rainy) adventure on one of the local ferries. We walked on, had a fun lunch on the other side, and then rode the ferry back to make it home in time for afternoon naps. (More on they later this week!)

Sunday, my Mom, Lila and I went to our second play of the season at the Seattle Children's Theater, where we saw "Where the Wild Things Are." I loved that book growing up and Lila loves it now too. The Seattle Center was beautiful and unlike Saturday it was a beautiful sunny day!

The play was cool too because they made it interactive for the kids and everyone got to sit on the actual stage.

After, Lila had to sit in the giant chair too!

And naturally we had to take a selfie in front of the Space Needle.

Then Sunday afternoon we watched football! Even though the Seahawks are out of the playoffs, we still had to see who will be going to the Superbowl.

Hope you had a nice weekend and have an even better week!

Recent Randoms ...

Hope you're having a great week. The best part about the long weekend for me was that the work week is already half over! Woo! Here are some random things happening around here ...

We got Lila one of these "OK to Wake" clocks when she moved into her "big girl" bed about 2 1/2, but with it being so dark out lately, Owen will sometimes wake up a couple hours early and think it's time to wake up, but then is cranky and overtired all day if we let him get up. So this weekend I got one for his room too. You set the clock with a "wake up" time and it starts to glow green when it's time to get up. It says it's for kids 3+, but it's totally already working!! This morning he woke up at 6 a.m. and Grant went into his room and told him to call us when his clock turned green and he fell back asleep until 8!

Have you been to Target's $1 bin lately?! I totally scored with some Valentine's Day stuff recently! Cute cards, Valentine's with lolipops for Lila's whole class, and some cute notepads.

I have really thick hair and HATE blow drying it because it takes forever and then I usually still have to straighten/curl it, so I was excited to try this cheap L'Oreal "Blow Dry It" Quick Dry Primer spray from the drug store. It seriously works (at least for me) and smells good too. My hair can get really fried/frizzy from all the heat products, so this makes it look nice and smooth.

Also ... have you seen all the Facebook ad videos for the "TYME" hair straightener/curler thing!? I seriously want one! They are pricey, but wonder if any of you have one and like it?

Hope you're having a great week!

Long Weekend Fun

Good morning! Happy Tuesday!! This was the first time in years that Grant and I both had MLK day off of work, so it was nice to have a long weekend and even nicer to have a short work week this week! Although short work weeks are always crazier ...

On Saturday we went into downtown Seattle hoping to go to Science Center's train exhibit, but it was so packed that we ended up at the Children's Museum instead (which is conveniently a quick walk away). It's so fun to go downtown and see the sites and walk around, it was fun for the kids since we normally do things slightly closer to home on the weekends.

It was pretty rainy this weekend but the sun was out in perfect time for us to take some pics of the Space Needle! Always love this view.

I've been trying to drink less cream with my coffee, so have been adding spices to the top for extra flavor. Love a little dash of cinnamon to spruce things up!

And on Sunday ... NOOOOO ... our beloved Seahawks lost to the Panthers so the season is over. After going to the Superbowl two years in a row it's a little disappointing, but still they had a great season and we can't wait for next year!

We also hit the indoor pool and "splash pad" baby beach, which apparently everyone else decided to do too (#toopacked). This was also my first time "swimming" in glasses - as you can imagine it was just lovely.

We also ate a lot of "his and hers" salads this weekend. Spinach with mushrooms, dried blueberries, marinated prawns, feta and balsamic for him ...

And mixed greens with cucumber, tomato, blue cheese crumbles and balsamic for her ...

Back to work today! Hope you all had a nice weekend.

Happy MLK!

I'm off work today in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. day. I haven't had this day off in years and it's always nice to have a long weekend. I looked up some MLK quotes in honor of today and they always give me chills. What courage he must have had given the time he lived in. Such wisdom that still rings true today.

Here are some of my favorites (via Pinterest) ...

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.:

Friday favs

Happy Friday!! I'm ready for a long weekend because this is the FIRST in many years that I've had MLK day off of work! Woo!! Also, the Seahawks are in another playoff game so we're excited to watch that on Sunday.

I had a good week ... wasn't so lucky in the Powerball though (wah wah), but I did magically have my name spelled right on my Starbucks iced tea!! The little things right?!

I'm on week two of wearing glasses 100% of the time in prep for getting Lasik in early Feb. Can't say I love it ... but it's getting easier I guess. Some people at work thought I was wearing fakes, but no, these are my cheapos from Warby Parker, which before this I only wore for about 10 minutes each night before bed.

And in other news after a super rainy week it was BEAUTIFUL and sunny yesterday! My mom took Owen to the park and texted me this sweet photo. He was so happy to run around outside without getting soaked!

I've been eating a lot of salads for dinner during the week, so not the most creative, but Grant got creative and made these impromptu "caprese breakfast calzones" using some leftover biscuit dough we had in the fridge. Delish!

Hope you all have a great weekend!!
