A weekend on the farm

This weekend we packed up early on Saturday morning and headed across the mountains to visit our friends in Eastern Washington. They moved a year ago to work on her family farm, which has pear and cherry orchards. Grant and I have been there before but it was the first time for the kids and they were so excited

First stop once you roll into town HAS to be the drive-in where they have the most enormous burgers ever. Holy huge!!

And of course, what's a burger without curly fries!! (Not pictured, our second burger + chocolate milk shake + onion rings. Let's just say I'll be eating salads all week).

My sweet little travel buddy!!

Once we arrived on the farm we wasted no time touring around the orchards. It's HOT in Eastern Washington, so we found lots of shade under the pear trees. Lila was so excited by this GIANT dandelion too!

Yakima is also known as a great wine tasting region, so that afternoon we stopped by a great winery that specializes in sparkling wines! They had a beautiful grounds too ... after a tasting we got a few sparkling wine cocktails which were so good!!

So refreshing! Mine was a pineapple/tropical type cocktail with sparkling riesling ... yum!

Then we came home for a little happy hour and good conversation. I love a good appetizer plate!

Then it was time for bed! Our friends had a hilarious Nicholas Cage pillow on their guest bed. Sweet dreams for sure!!!!

Pretty pears ready for harvest soon! Our friends' pears are all sold to be canned, which is pretty cool! I never really thought about seeing where canned fruit comes from but there you go!

Owen loved picking them right off the tree, and there were even a bunch low enough for him to pick.

And of course there were lots of tractor rides too. Farmer Lila!

And then we went to the Yakima Farmer's Market before heading out of town ... SO much great produce on the Eastern side of the state. Funny how one state can have such different climates! Seattle is mild and rainy and Eastern Washington is dry and sunny and has four distinct seasons.

We had such a great time!! Hope to be back again soon!

Work trip!

My busiest work months are June and July, prepping for a big conference, which is why I've been MIA of late, but it wrapped last week and I actually even got to have a little fun too!

Here we are leaving rainy/gloomy Seattle ...

... For warm and sunny Florida!! Seriously southern girls, I don't know how you do your hair. Mine was a sweaty/limp/frizzy mess after 10 minutes. Holy humidity! (This pic it still looks ok, I should have done an "after" pic).

Elevator selfie before spending many long hours in a convention center.

Thankfully after spending the daylight hours in a dark conference room, I was able to hit the pool in time for happy hour! Which of course, made me very happy.

As did the tropical drinks. This was a pineapple caipirinha - Sooo delicious!

Lounging felt amazing after a long day ...

Elevator selfie round two - 5:30 am edition. East coast mornings are rough when your body thinks it's 2 am!!

The pros? We had some great Cuban food on this trip and pitchers of mojitos were also abundant.

And of course - paella!! So good.

I also hit Disney Springs one night, which was paccckkked, but a trip to the Ghiradelli shop for ice cream was so worth it.

And on the last day I had about three hours to spare before my flight so I finally hit the pool. Ahhh!!! Amazing.

With my new desert-inspired Havianas of course!

And a little rum punch ...

Mmmm!!

All in all, a great trip and now thankfully it's the start of a "summer lull" at work so I can catch up and enjoy the summer.

Wide Open Spaces!

This weekend I dragged Grant to see the Dixie Chicks on their DCX tour!!! This is their first tour in 10 years (hence the tour name), and I was so excited. The show was amazing - I'd forgotten how much I loved their music! Grant was probably one of only five or so guys in attendance (haha), but he was a trooper and we had a great time.

We'd bought lawn seats, imagining that a concert in July outdoors would be so fun to sit in the grass and relax ...

Here we are waiting for the show to begin!!

ANNNNND, despite the sunshine when we got there, in true Seattle fashion, it started raining. Ugh!!! It was POURING for almost the entire show. Thankfully, we planned ahead and had rain coats.

Nevertheless, we had a great time. If you follow my Instagram (@kkgisme), you can hear a few videos of my favorite songs, but they put on such a great show!! They even did a twangy bluegrass instrumental version of "Single Ladies" by Beyonce - lol!!!

And in true form, they had a few "political" messages ... guessing nobody's surprised they are anti-Donald.

All in all, super fun!

As for the rest of the weekend, the kids managed to swindle me into an ice cream date - mmm!!!

And of course, the sunshine came out Sunday afternoon so we hit the zoo to see the new butterfly exhibit. And naturally had to sit on the tractor, too.

Hope you all had a great weekend!!

Vacation favs

I feel like vacation is an excuse to eat poorly indulge in all of my favorites. Here are some fun "outtake" pics from our recent weekend away.

Windy photoshoot. We couldn't keep our hair out of our faces so Lila held hers down and Owen kept his eyes shut!

Treating the fam to ice cream cones at the local Farmer's Market before 10 a.m. - because why not!?

This locally made blueberry cheesecake ice cream was OH so delicious.

Homemade eats at our cabin after the kids go to bed! Mmmm! Lamb, salad and corn. So delish.

Getting to wear whatever you want hiking. My parents always tell this story about me going to the top of Mt. Bachelor in Oregon when I was a kid wearing flip flops in the snow. I get so annoyed with Lila for doing the same thing, but then this weekend I realized here we both are on a hike wearing dresses and sandals. I guess the apple doesn't fall too far in this case! Grant was naturally thrilled.

The cabin we rented had these napkins left out for us along with a bottle of wine - lol!

Eating big breakfasts outdoors ... always a fav.

And of course, any summer trip isnt' complete without s'mores!!!

Weekend getaway

Since we had yesterday off of work for the 4th of July holiday, we made the last-minute decision on Thursday to see if we could go away for the weekend. I sent emails to three VRBOs to see if they'd be open to last minute deals. I'm so glad I tried it! We found a great little rental only an hour and a half drive away, in a little resort town/community that is totally the 'over the river and through the woods' type vibe. It was GREAT! So Friday morning we got in a few hours of work at home, packed up the car and headed out!

Here are the kids with the beautiful trees in the background! It was pretty windy but oh so pretty.

The resort is on a golf course and this picture doesn't do this hole justice - you tee off up on this big hill and you can barely make out the flag below. If only I were good at golf ...

Taking it all in ...

The great thing about where we went is that it's all walkable!! You can walk from the various cabins to the lodge, to a winery, to playgrounds, etc.

And it didn't hurt that our cabin had a hot tub either, perfect for a little naptime glass of wine and R&R!!!

They had a ton of 4th of July activities set up as well. Here are the kids playing a little Corn Hole ...

Sunday morning we drove into the cute little town of Roslyn to hit their farmer's market and get ice cream before lunch. What else are vacations for!!

We also had afternoon wine flights at Swiftwater Cellars. So delicious!!

The beautiful Cle Elum River ...

And then it was time to go home. We celebrated being "true Americans" by getting McDonald's for the drive home. Their giant mocha frapp was actually not half bad (#sohealthy).

I'm totally going to try for last minute VRBO deals in the future!! We saved nearly half off and had a great weekend getaway that wasn't too far from home.

Hope you had a great weekend as well!
